Two big mysteries at Lane Cove that night -- who or what killed Mrs. Chandler and Dr. Bogle? And then the smaller ones: who was the "blondie man" Challis allegedly saw? And who those "acting the goat," plashing about in the river? Police ever ID them? Why didn't Cecil Styles's dog bark, right there across the water? But my favorite is the lad of perhaps five, out before the sun -- 5:10am-5:12am, Eric McGrath testified: Sgt Goode: Did you pull up? McGrath: Yes, I spoke to him. I opened the near side car door and asked him if he was lost. The boy said "I want to go home" and walked past.
McGrath caught up with the boy again, got out of his car, took the boy by the arm, and asked if he was lost and needed help. Wait, what? The boy seemed to be "in a shocked state of mind and said: 'No, no, no... I want to go home'." McGrath: When I asked him if he wanted me to take him to the police station if he was lost, a man appeared out of the bush. I said to the man "Is this your son?" or I might have said "Is this your boy?" The man said "No." My attention was diverted by the boy trying to get away, and two seconds later the man had disappeared.
McGrath said the boy "mumbled something about having been to the Middleton's," and then ran away up the road.
Sgt Goode: You let the boy go?
McGrath: I couldn't do anything else.
And thus, and apparently, Feral Child, 5 turned tail on eternity and fled. www.boglechandler.com/bcInquest13May1963.html
